 Brigadier General (Ret) David W. Winn, WWII,  Vietnam Veteran, USAF Academy, Colorado Springs, CO

The Patriot Guard Riders have been invited to participate in the memorial services for GEN David W. Winn at the cadet chapel on the USAF Academy on 9 November.

GEN Winn has flown combat missions during WWII and Vietnam, and supported freedom on several fronts during the Cold War. More about this hero can be found in his official USAF biography here: http://www.af.mil/information/bios/bio.asp?bioID=7625

We do not yet have staging information for this mission, but expect it to be a very high-profile mission with several dignitaries present. If you have not filled out the DoD base access form, please do so as soon as possible if you plan on attending this mission. Those not on the list may not be allowed access to the Academy during this service. The form can be found here: http://www.coloradopgr.org/captaintools/DoDForm.aspx (You only have to fill it out once, if you have already done so, you will receive an error when trying to save the form)

As of now, I will be the Ride Captain for this mission, however I would ask all southern RCs to be available for this if possible.

Thank you.

For this country, this Warrior has stood the watch.

While some of us were in our beds at night, this Warrior stood the watch.

While some of us were in school learning our trade, this Warrior stood the watch.

Yes, even before some of us were born into this world ... this Warrior stood the watch.

In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history this Warrior stood the watch.

Many times he would cast an eye home and see his family standing there ... needing his guidance and help ... needing that hand to hold during those hard times ... but he still stood the watch.

He stood the watch for years, He stood the watch so that we, our families, and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety each and every night knowing that a Warrior stood the watch.

Today we are here to say “Friend, the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those you have led, guided, and trained. You stand relieved. We have the watch.”

GOD BLESS!

Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now,soldier.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime.
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord.
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now,soldier
you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets;
you’ve done your time in Hell."

I will post mission updates as soon as we receive them. As you can imagine, the coordination for this type of event is not easy for the Academy, so they are scrambling on their side to attend to the schedule for all involved. Once they work it all out, they'll let me know, and I'll post the update here..

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of BG, David W. Winn, USAF (Ret), WWII and Vietnam Wars Veteran. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. He is one of America's Heroes that will never be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, David.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.
