IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 571-09
August 02, 2009

Remains Identified as Navy Captain Michael Scott Speicher

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) has positively identified remains recovered in Iraq as those of Captain Michael Scott Speicher.  Captain Speicher was shot down flying a combat mission in an F/A-18 Hornet over west-central Iraq on January 17th, 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Speicher's family for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country," said Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy.  "I am also extremely grateful to all those who have worked so tirelessly over the last 18 years to bring Captain Speicher home."

"Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be," said Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations.  "We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Captain Speicher and his family for the sacrifice they have made for our nation and the example of strength they have set for all of us."

Acting on information provided by an Iraqi citizen in early July, US Marines stationed in Al Anbar Province went to a location in the desert which was believed to be the crash site of Captain Speicher's jet.  The Iraqi citizen stated he knew of two Iraqi citizens who recalled an American jet impacting the desert and the remains of the pilot being buried in the desert.  One of these Iraqi citizens stated that they were present when Captain Speicher was found dead at the crash site by Bedouins and his remains buried.  The Iraqi citizens led US Marines to the site who searched the area.  Remains were recovered over several days during the past week and flown to Dover Air Force Base for scientific identification by the AFIP's Office of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner.

The recovered remains include bones and multiple skeletal fragments.  Positive identification was made by comparing Captain Speicher's dental records with the jawbone recovered at the site. The teeth are a match, both visually and radiographically.

While dental records have confirmed the remains to be those of Captain Speicher, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology DNA Lab in Rockville, Maryland is running DNA tests on the remains recovered in Iraq and comparing them to DNA reference samples previously provided by family members.  Results will take approximately 24 hours.

A high-resolution photo of Captain Speicher is available at http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=2934

No. 016-01
IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 11, 2001

NAVY CHANGES STATUS OF CMDR. MICHAEL SCOTT SPEICHER

Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig has changed the status of Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher from Killed in Action/Body Not Recovered (KIA/BNR) to Missing in Action (MIA). Speicher's F/A-18 aircraft was shot down by enemy fire in the first day of the air war over Iraq on Jan. 17, 1991. He was placed in an MIA status the next day. On May 22, 1991, following a Secretary of the Navy status review board that found "no credible evidence" to suggest he had survived the shootdown, his status was changed to KIA/BNR.

In December 1995, working through the International Committee of the Red Cross, investigators from the Navy and Army's Central Identification Laboratory entered Iraq and conducted a thorough excavation of the crash site. In September 1996, based on a comprehensive review of evidence accumulated since the initial KIA/BNR determination, the Secretary of the Navy reaffirmed the presumptive finding of death.

Over the years since that determination was made, the Navy and the U.S. government have consistently sought new information and continued to analyze all available information to resolve Speicher's fate. This additional information and analysis, when added to the information considered in 1996, underscored the need for a new review.

Based on the review, Danzig has concluded that Speicher's status should be "Missing in Action."

Schmidtrock,

I am not 100% positive, but I seem to have seen him listed as Captain before. I am not sure if the military services hold a person in his status as currently active, and apply promotions at the appropriate time. I am not 100% certain on this, and it may have been conjecture as to what he would be when he is found (and God willing, someday he is).

I will research this further. That is indeed what they do, apply promotions at appropriate levels while a servicemember is being held pow/mia as is the case with SGT Maupin. He was a PFC when captured.

I wear a bracelet for LCDR "Spike" Speicher and he has been promoted twice in his absence. There have been many reports to suggest that Spike is still alive and I pray that our country will do everything in it's power to bring he and the rest of our "unnaccounted" for heroes home. Take a look at this www.friendsofscottspeicher.org and www.operationfreespike.com

After a considerable amount of research and phone calls, I've confirmed that Scott Speicher is indeed still listed as "Missing-Captured" and that he has been promoted twice. His current rank is Captain.

When in high school during the 70's, I remember people wearing the aluminum bracelets. Since I was in Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield and Storm, I feel a part of his being missing and wear a stainless steel bracelet while waiting for news of his return. From one Navy man to another, you are not forgotten.

I, too, wear Captain Speicher's bracelet.
My unit only has one "big" social event per year...our Christmas party. I started a tradition last year of having the POW/MIA table and ceremony. There was a framed, faded photograph of Captain Speicher on the table last Christmas. Toward the end of the evening, one of our officers told everyone who the picture was and that it wasn't just a random photograph. It was very touching to see people stand at the table in their own time and look at the photo.

AS you've already heard camp Speicher is infact named for Capt Speicher. We launched him from the deck of
the USS Saratoga in the first mission of Desert Storm. He was in VFA-81 and I was in the sister Squadron VFA-83
and then as now we never had enough people so we always helped each of out. So it was a great lose to us all
and we are still waiting for his return. I've included a link to his web sight so if want to check it during some down time.
Thanks for your service and maybe you guys can finish what we started.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long delirious, burning blue,
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -

And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untresspassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
