On Veterans’ Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at 10:30a.m., Keep Jackson Beautiful in Partnership with The City of Jackson and Madison County, is planning a patriotic celebration to honor Veterans’ with the dedication of the Freedom Plaza and Arboretum. Liberty Garden was first championed in 2001 as a living memorial to September 11. Recent development at Liberty Garden increases the utilization of the 14.5-acre park located at the corner of Stonebridge and Channing Way.
The Freedom Plaza is located within a section of Liberty Garden and features several points of interests. Four kiosks house over 30 Charters of American Freedom documents.. A Battlefield Cross Sculpture reflects the fallen soldier. Central focus in the Freedom Plaza is a Veteran’s Memorial Wall that includes the names of fallen soldiers back to WWI from Jackson and Madison County. A decorative, round, concrete replica of the Tennessee Flag, surrounded by a ‘seating wall’ and accenting landscape, will frame the Veteran’s Memorial Wall. The walking trail connects to the Freedom Plaza creating fluid movement for school field trips and visitors. A cannon display coordinated by the Marine Corps League Capt. Jack Holland Detachment #735 is anticipated in the near future.
Cultivation of trees for educational, scientific, and aesthetic purpose is happening at the Liberty Garden Arboretum. The Arboretum encompasses all 14.5 park acres and is pending State Certification. Jodi Jacobs, Coordinator of Keep Jackson Beautiful for the City of Jackson is also the City Forester. Jacobs states, “To perpetuate the arboretum, a Tree Planting Program has been established that will sustain and promote tree succession. Planting trees in the arboretum also offers the community a viewing source of various species.”
Tammy Buchanan, KJB Commission Member and Liberty Garden Chairman, states, ‘Park patrons find Liberty Garden is a beautiful place graced with peace and patriotism. The additions enhance both the educational and wellness benefit of the park and serve to encourage creative play in an environmentally aesthetic ‘outdoor classroom’ experience. Phase II development at Liberty Garden has gratefully been achieved through the vision and combined investment of individuals, corporations, community groups and government.”
The Dedication at Liberty Garden will include a Patriot Guard Flag Line, Color Guard, National Guard AH84 Apache Helicopter Flyover, DAR Liberty Tree Dedication, Colonial Dames Flag Retirement Ceremony, Innovations Choir of Jackson State Community College, and Trumpeter, Tom Grant. Program Emcee is Steve Bowers. Program Speakers include Mayor Gist, Mayor Harris, Senator Lowe Finney, and LtCol John Wehner, USMC (RET).
