Curry Montgomery Lawler Jr. joined the United States Navy in 1965, where he achieved the rank of Commander (O5). Throughout his 21 years and five months of service, including four years of sea duty, Commander Lawler was honored with numerous awards. These included two Air Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, a Navy Expeditionary Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and recognition as an Expert Pistol Marksman.
