In the Marines.After boot camp he was stationed in Guantanamo Bay,Cuba,for artillery training. He was then stationed in Camp Delmar in California, where he taught Landing Vehicles Tracked (LVT) crews on the use of the 105mm howitzer. John rose quickly through the ranks and became one of the youngest non-commissioned officers in the US Marines. He was promoted to crew chief on an LVT-H-6 and was deployed to Vietnam. In May of 1967 he was seriously wounded in combat at Con Thien, Vietnam. In 1968 he was honorably retired by the Marine Corps. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart among other medals.He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, the DAV and the American Legion.
