Lieutenant Colonel Robert “Bob” Jenks, passed away on April 26, 2025, at the age of 88. LTC Jenks joined the United State Army in 1959 and graduated from the Army Officer Candidate School in 1960. He devoted himself to a life of service and had a distinguished military career as an airborne artillery officer, jungle warfare expert (honor graduate), Defense Intelligence Agency imagery intelligence officer, recruiter and adjutant for 22 years.
He served two tours in Vietnam, from 1968-1969 and 1970-1971, with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), where he became known as a warrior who faced the challenges of war with unwavering resolve and integrity. His service earned him numerous commendations, including: a Presidential Unit Citation; two Meritorious Service Medals; four Bronze Star Medals; two Air Medals;, including citations for 25 combat aerial missions over Vietnam; three Army Commendation Medals; two Army Achievement Medals; two Vietnam Service and Campaign Ribbons; two Armed Forces Reserve Medals; and the National Defense Service Medal. He earned one of the Air Medals for successfully landing an F-100 surveillance aircraft, from the back seat, after the pilot was incapacitated, saving both the aircraft and the pilot’s life.
During and following his military career, Bob served as a basketball and baseball sports coach and trainer, church usher, choir member, a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus and was a Boy Scout Troop Scoutmaster and Boy Scout Assistant Fairfax District Commissioner. He was also a founding member of the United States Museum of the Army at Fort Belvoir. After his retirement from the military, he worked for 28+ years at Burke Nursery and Garden Center, a job he would say was the most enjoyable work of his career.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Jenks will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico and the Patriot Guard Riders will be there to stand tall, silent and proud, in honor of this United States Army Officer and Vietnam War veteran
